All excited for your first job and nervous at the same time? Perhaps, your mind is flooded with several questions on how to easily merge with new colleagues. Every work space has its own environment and with that comes the hidden rules which you need to figure out yourself. All you need to do is stay alert and go with the flow. Relax, shed any apprehensions, if you have for here are a few guidelines to help you get started:
Make yourself presentable – Dedicate some time for grooming. A well dressed person creates a good impression on those around. It’s not always necessary to dress yourself in brands (unless you’re a part of the corporate world), but make sure you wear neat and clean clothes every day. Avoid overdressing or wearing too much makeup. Take care of personal hygiene; keep mints and deodorants handy just in case you need to use them.
Using Mobile Phones at office: You should be aware of your company’s policy related to use of personal mobile phone at work. It’s a must!! Even if you feel you can get away with it, keep in mind there is always someone watching you. Spending too much time with your phone sends out a clear message that you have ample of time to waste. Also, make sure your ring tone is not annoying. Choose simple low ring tone or opt for the meeting profile to save yourself from embarrassment.
Learn the right etiquette- Laughing and talking too loudly will grab a lot of unwanted attention. Keep yourself composed at all times. Using magic words like ‘thank you’, ‘excuse me’ and ‘please’ will help a lot.
The way you eat speaks a lot about your personality. Bad eating manners should be avoided at all times to avoid being disgraced in front of colleagues. Make sure you eat slowly and never ever speak with your mouth full. While eating, chew with your mouth closed, don’t slurp or burp as you don’t want to be known as the ‘pig’ of the office.
Avoid surfing unnecessary websites- Nowadays, using the internet has become the most beneficial tool at work. However, think twice when tempted to check your profile on social websites too often. Bosses and colleagues passing around may get a glimpse. Unnecessary websites flashing on your screen will give out the impression of not being the hardworking kind. Hope you are aware of the fact that each site you visit is being tracked. So, if you don’t want to land into trouble, visit work related sites whilst private browsing can be done during the break or at home (Privacy!!)
Stay away from office gossips- It is easy to get tagged along in office talks. Whether you were the one gossiping or not, the fact that you were present there matters a lot. Sometimes it is better to stay mum or just nod your head. Don’t be surprised to see many fingers pointing at you if the gossip comes out in the open. Avoid making personal comments and mocking gestures. If there is really something bothering you, talking to your mentor or the HR executive will sort the concerns and worries. Its good to be interactive but make sure you don’t go overboard.
Socializing and getting acquainted- It is really hard to judge anyone during the first week at work. As the wise say, “A man is known by the company he keeps”. So make sure you’re with the right group of colleagues. Always greet everyone with a smile as no one wants to see a grumpy face in the morning. Try your best not to make enemies, clear things out if there are issues. Introverts should try their best to get into conversations. Definitely you don’t want to seem like a fish out of water. Do socialize at least once a month to maintain a good relationship with your colleagues.
