Karnala Fort

Fact Sheet: Karnala fort is situated about 20km south of Panvel situated in the middle of Karnla Bird Sanctuary. The fort is counted as one of the best winter treks since the weather is pleasant and you can see a lot of bird activity in the jungle. Birds like Drongo, Crow Pheasant, koels, robins, Shashi Pheasants, Robins, Scarlet Mine vets, White Back Vultures, The Great Indian Horned Owl, Grey horn bills are among few of the birds spotted here. To the northeast, you will find Haji Malang, and just below before that, Prabalgad and Matheran. To the east, in the distance is a hazy view of Bhimashankar. To the south are Rajmachi and the Duke’s Nose, to the Southwest is the Mahal Mira hill range while to the west is the metropolis of Mumbai.

Naneghat

Fact Sheet: Naneghat Pass is a mountain pass located in Malshej Ghat region of Pune district, this route has been extensively used as a trade route between Kalyan and Junnar. Naneghat trek is one of most visited place in the vicinity of Mumbai and the best place for a monsoon trek.

Mahuli Fort

Fact Sheet: Mahuli Fort at 2815 ft is a popular trekking destination and a paradise for rock-climbers because of many nearby pinnacles. This mountain complex is actually a group of two or more hills with common cols and pinnacles. It is the highest point in the Thane district, and the forest surrounding Mahuli has been declared as a sanctuary. Once Shahaji Raje, father of Chatrapati Shivaji, had this fortress under his belt, has been declared as a protected monument. Besides an open Shiva temple there is a small perennial drinking water cistern on top, three caves of which the larger can be used as overnight shelter, like as on many other such natural hill forts of Maharashtra Western Ghats (Sahyadri Range).

Raigad Fort

Fact Sheet: Raigad is a hill fortress situated in the near Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. The Maratha king Shivaji made the fort his capital in 1674 when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom which later developed into the Maratha Empire eventually covering majority of modern day India.The fort is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. There are approximately 1737 steps leading to the fort, though today an aerial tram exists to reach the top of the fort. The fort was looted and destroyed by the British upon siege.

Rajmachi

Fact Sheet: Rajmachi (Udhewadi) is a small village in the rugged mountains of Sahyadri in India. Built by Emperor Shivaji during 17th century, it is famous fort located near two famous hills of Lonavala and Khanadala, a famous spot for trekking. The fort overlooks Borghat(ghat between Mumbai and Pune) which was a historical trade route. Rajmachi peak has two fortified structures – the Shrivardhan fort and Manoranjan fort. Rajmachi can be reached by two ways, the tough route from Kondivade village near Karjat and the other easy but longer route from Lonavala.

Bhimashankar
