The Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India was conferred to legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar by President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday. The Durbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan was decked up for the glittering ceremony which had the political as well as industrial dignitaries in attendance.

Sachin Tendulkar joins in the list of 41 eminent personalities who have been awarded Bharat Ratna in recognition to his contribution to the society. At 40, he also is the youngest and the only sportsperson to receive this award, till date.

Sachin retired in November 2013 from all form of cricket as one of the most accomplished and dynamic cricketers in the world.

  • 15,921 runs from a record 200 Test matches at an average of 53.58 and 51 centuries
  • 18,426 runs from 463 ODIs with an average of 44.83 including 49 centuries
  • The first one to score a double hundred in the 50-over format

1997-98: Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Highest honor in India given for achievement in sports.
1999: Padma Shri, fourth highest civilian award in India

2014: Bharat Ratna, Highest civilian award in India
