You plant a hope when you plant a seed. You hope that it grows a happy life and brings in luck and kindness in your household. Vastu Shastra is a science that is applicable to plants in your house as well. Plants play a very important role as they energize our surroundings. Indoor plants add an aesthetic appeal to the house .It is also a known fact that some plants emit certain gases which are harmful for human inhalation. Also, there are some plants which are considered inauspicious. Hence, Vastu Shastra recommends that the plants within your home need to be chosen with utmost care and be placed in the right direction so that they shower positivity and wellbeing on the residents hosting them.

Plants bring a sense of calmness in us. It is like a feeling of being one with nature. Add to the woes of modern world, houses are mere concrete jungles. So isn’t it good when we have plants at our homes? And when we have plants surrounding us drinking the early morning cup of tea amidst them is sheer pleasure. The Vastu does not negate altogether the placing of plants. But in correlation to the elements of nature, it advises us on what plants are to be placed indoors and at what corners are they to be placed. Maintaining the perfect harmony with elements is important to leverage the maximum benefit. So it is a yes for some plants while some plants are better grown outdoors to maintain serenity and tranquillity inside the house. So place plants accordingly and see how the benefits of Vastu help in spreading joie de vivre in your life.

Also did you know that the five elements of nature affect the growth of plants? Certain directions help in certain ways.

  • Air represents northwest direction and helps in cross-pollination of the plants.

  • Space which is the centre area is associated with flow of positive energy and influences the surroundings.

  • Fire represents southeast direction and here the plants remain healthy and strong.

  • Water represents the northeast direction and helps the plant to grow full fledge in abundance.

  • Finally the earth represents the southwest direction and it helps the plant to be firmly rooted to the ground.

When you understand the elements and the directions associated with it, you will learn why and where certain plants are to be planted.

  1. Big and tall trees are to be grown in the south, west or southwest direction since that direction represents earth and big trees need that their roots be firmly planted to the ground.

  2. Fruit bearing trees are to be planted in the east.

  3. Tulsi is to be grown in the north, east or northeast direction

  4. Small flowering plants are to be grown in the southwest direction.

  5. Creepers are to be grown in the exteriors.

  6. Small shrubs are best grown in the north and east.

Now let us get down into the task of organizing the type and placement of plants. Vastu tips below can provide you some insight into this topic:

Tulsi, also known as Basil, is a very auspicious plant in Hindu culture. This plant is generally worshipped in the house and is believed to bring prosperity to the inmates of the house. Tulsi is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicines. It purifies the blood and improves the digestive system. It is believed to be useful in treating many types of diseases. This plant needs to be kept in the north, north-east or eastern part of the house. If there is any Vastu-dosh, this plant never grows in its natural form.

Tulsi, the mother of all holy plants has a sacred place in our hearts and is worshipped by one and all. It is to be placed where it gets enough sunshine to grow and it is to be watered daily. Hence it occupies the position of northeast, east and north, since sunshine is plenty there. And you might have observed that most of the rural households have their tulsi plant placed right in the front corner of their homes. Plants like tulsi, due to their excellent therapeutic properties is said to clean and purify the air. So even if you are having space constraints, try placing a pot of tulsi in the north or northeast balcony. This sure is going to bring prosperity and maintain good health of you and your family.

Creepers

As the name suggests, creepers cannot stand by themselves and take the help of support to grow. Vastu suggests that creepers be grown outside the house and not be placed indoors. That is because if placed inside they take the support of walls to grow which weakens the walls since water starts seeping in gradually. And a badly maintained house invites negative energies wherein there will be disturbances in finance and health of the people in the house.

The best place to grow creepers is in the gardens. However, they should not take support of any walls and should be independent. Money Plant, probably is the only creeper that, can be grown within the house and not to be grown outside. Also it is the only plant that can be grown in the bedroom.

Thorny plants

Thorny plans are a strict no-no inside the house. They bring in a lot of negativity; the only exception being the beautiful rose plant. Thorny plans can also injure you and also bring in bad luck.

Cactus is associated with bringing in a lot of negative energy. They cause health related issues to the kidney and lungs. One solution is to place an Ashoka sapling in between the thorny plants. This helps in negating the ill effects of cactus. And it is not that Vastu simply disallows the placing of cactus inside the house without valid reasons. As it is, cactus has numerous thorns in it. And house is a place where everyone keeps moving from one room to another. And also they keep things according to their convenience. So but naturally, cactus wouldn’t suit any of the places inside the house. You can simply say that, it causes a lot of inconvenience.

And usually what does a cactus signify? Cactus grows in places where there is less rain or no rain at all. So they say that placing cactus inside the house means loneliness, scarcity of water and in general scarcity of abundance and increase in negativity.

But even rose is a thorny plant. But it doesn’t have so many prickly thorns like in a cactus. So rose can be placed in the house and it denotes auspiciousness. Similarly citrus fruits like lemon have also thorns in them. But it is considered lucky and so is the Bel tree.

Bamboo plants

Bamboo plants are believed to bring good luck and protect the inmates of the house against the evil powers. Stalks of bamboo, popularly known as Lucky Bamboo is suitable for household or office use. Growth and health of this plant is associated with good luck and wealth. Different arrangements of the stalks of this plant represent different properties. E.g. 3 stalks signify happiness, 5 stalks signify good health and so on.

Even Feng-Shui advocates and propagates the use of Bamboo stalks both at home and in offices. Bamboo represents wood and the fire is denoted by the red ribbon tied to the bamboo stalk. So wood and fire represent the perfect balance wherever it is placed. Bamboo is to be placed in the east if one is to benefit from the health aspects. When placed in the southeast, bamboo is said to help you gain prosperity. Southeast is the direction of money and wealth. So bamboo is said to attract wealth and you will have it in abundance.

The lucky bamboo is to be placed such that the five elements of nature come together. So how are the five elements of nature incorporated in the bamboo stalks?

  • Earth is represented by the stones or pebbles in the container.

  • The wood is represented by the bamboo stalk itself.

  • Water is represented by the water in the container.

  • Fire is represented usually by something like a red ribbon tied around it.

  • Metal is represented by the coins placed inside the container.

But when placing a bamboo, care is to be taken about the direction and count of stalks to get the maximum benefit.

  • Two stalks represent love and it is considered to bring luck to the couple.

  • Three represents happiness and longevity.

  • Five is for health.

  • Six represents good luck and harmony.

  • Seven is for good health for the entire family.

  • Eight stalks are for overall growth both personally and professionally.

  • Nine numbers is for luck.

  • Ten is the number for feeling of contentment and perfection.

Know that this ‘lucky bamboo’ is different from the regular and common bamboo plant. And also take care not to place bonsai bamboo plant inside the house. And another point to be worth noted here is to go for the yellow coloured stalks over the dark ones. And also bamboo needs proper sunlight for its growth. So place it where there is adequate sunlight and see to it that the water never dries.

Few generic tips:

1. Milky trees are best avoided as they may bring unhealthiness to the family.

2. Cascading or crawling indoor plants, reduce imbalance or protruding or sharp columns, corners or pillars.

3. Avoid bonsai plants inside and around the house as they are believed to restrict growth.

4. Growing of lemon, lotus and jasmine are considered lucky as per Vastu Shastra

6. Peace lily, with its dark green leaves and white flowers signify peace and harmony. This can be used to brighten your workspace or your house.

7. Fruit plants must be planted in the east direction.

8. Purple coloured plant or a plant in purple coloured pot can attract wealth.

9. The trees which are favourable and bring luck are mango, jackfruit, coconut, lemon and pineapple.

10. The plants which are auspicious are tulsi, jasmine, saffron and pomegranate.

11. Big trees should never be grown in the centre.

12. The garden should be properly maintained.

13. Dry leaves must be removed from the plants regularly.

14. Creepers and small plants should be trimmed and checked for overgrowth.

15. Dead plant should be immediately removed from the house.

16. Also leafless plants are not encouraged to be placed inside the house.

17. Big trees should not be planted close to the house. They block the sunlight and also its roots damage the foundation of the house.

18. If you are interested in rock garden while landscaping, place it in the southwest direction.

19. It is good to plant neem trees along the sides of the approach road to your house. Neem tree is known to repel insects and mosquitoes and thus ensures good health in your home and surroundings.

20. See to it that the shadow of big plant does not continuously fall on the house. It is an indicator that it is blocking the light from entering the house.

Trees and plants bring joy and happiness in our homes. With the right blend of Vastu and direction, the perfect selection of plants can be made and positioned. Take good care of plants by placing them in sunshine and water the plants regularly. Tending and nurturing the plants acts as a stress buster. It helps to calm the inner mind and helps us relax and unwind. And also it helps the house look beautiful.
