Sumita Chakraborty helps you pick the right perfume.

The greatest perfumer of Modern History, Coco Chanel had once said, “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no history.” Pretty strong a statement but it is a fact. You may be dressed in the best outfits, but if you do not smell fragrant, you just won’t be able to make a grand impact – in fact, perhaps, it may just end up being the opposite. A good perfume is a woman’s best friend. And if you smell good, half your battle of making a fabulous fashion statement is made.

But picking the right perfume is a little dicey. Here, your nose is the best perfume sniffer, so go ahead, trust it impeccably. But before you go sniffing around, let’s first recognize the types of perfumes around.

There are several types of perfumes starting from floral, citrus, woody, Oriental, musk to more. You need to know how to pick the right fragrance that suits you to the ‘T’.

Perfume Splendour

Florals as the name suggests smells of flowers. It has a sweet smell of jasmine, rose, orchid or any other bouquet of flowers.

Citrus is light and has a wonderful smell of fresh oranges, lemons, grapefruits and other citrus fruits.

Woody has the rich smell of the bark of trees like patchouli and other sweet smelling barks. It is earthy and rich.

Oriental takes you back to the Far East. It has the lingering fragrance of vanilla and other incenses.

Musk is earthy and strong. It is a man’s scent.

Fragrances are often divided into Eau De Cologne, Eau De Toilette, Eau De Parfum and of course, Perfume. The difference is the level of alcohol content. For instance, Eau De Cologne has 3-5% sweet smelling oils mixed with alcohol and water, Eau De Toilette has four to nine percent oil mixed with alcohol while Eau De Parfum has 15-16 percent oil mixed with alcohol. Perfume have about 15 to 32 percent oil mixed with alcohol. Hence, it is more elusive and expensive than its Eau De cousins.

Your perfume depicts your signature style whether you’re smelling as sweet as roses or floating around enveloped in citrus. Even for others, more often than not, your nose identifies the person by the perfume he or she uses.

So to smell good, you need to know which perfume suits you best. For that, you need to find out for yourself which perfume makes you feel on top of the world.

Since it’s all about smelling good, go ahead, and do some research. Head to the nearest mall and sashay your way to the nearest perfume counter. And get ready for to be transported into a spritzer’s paradise.

Know Your Perfume

For women, it’s all about smelling sweet, so florals and citrus are the buzzwords. But for men, it’s all about smelling woody, musky, or completely masculine with leather or tobacco.

But before you decide on making that ‘particular’ perfume your own, here’s a checklist you should know about:

Know your perfume @TheRoyaleIndia
  • Spend some time with the perfume. If you love the smell of roses, spray some on yourself and check out if you and the perfume are compatible till the end of the day. If you start finding it cloying, then obviously, you’re not soul mates. The mantra here is to try out different perfumes before you finally decide on the perfect one.

  • Don’t spray on too many spritzers all at once; it will fix your nose which will send you mixed signals. Perhaps for you to settle down on the perfect perfume will encompass many days of research until your nose zeroes in on the perfect perfume.

  • India is a tropical country, so we end up sweating a lot. A citrus note perfume works for us while in Europe because of the cold, a woody touch works its magic. For countries like China, Oriental adds to the magic. For men, musk is perfect as it gives a wonderful masculine fragrance.

But of course, this is a general observation, for an individual insight, you have to:

  • Get to the root of the perfume and find out if you enjoy the first note. For instance, to find out which perfume you like, first, know yourself – do you like the sweet smell of roses or the light, invigorating touch of lemons? Once you zero on your likes, buying the right perfume is a cakewalk.

  • Before you spray on yourself, spray on a card first. Sniff it and then smell it again after 10 minutes. Do you like the smell? Yes? No?

Coffee beans @TheRoyaleIndia
  • You’ll find most perfume counters have a small cup of coffee beans too. That’s to get the nose acclimatized to ground reality after smelling too many scents. The coffee bean gets your confused nose working again. So after sniffing two or more perfumes, go ahead, smell the coffee.

  • If your skin is dry, then the perfume will disappear faster for that you need a stronger perfume than what an oily skin type needs.

  • We smell better later in the day so shop for perfumes more towards the evenings.

apply perfume @TheRoyaleIndia
  • Perfume should be applied on the body’s pulse points – the nape of the neck, pulse, behind the ears and knees.

Now that you know your perfume go ahead, and spread the sweet smell. There are so many Perfume offers that are available. Choose yours carefully. After all, you know your signature fragrance style!
