We all often believe that eating healthy means you have to skip the dessert. But, in reality, you can actually have sweet treats if only you learn to look for the right ingredients and of course, watch your portion size. The magical protein and fibre packed oats can be smartly used to make your favourite muffins, crumbles, cookies or even scones.

In this article, we have picked our two favourite oatmeal dessert recipes that will change the way you look at oats.

1. Cranberry Apple Raisin Crisp

This crisp recipe is a delightful combination of cranberries, oats, raisins and apples. You can serve this homey dessert warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or if you like it straight (i.e. without ice cream), then do reduce the amount of grounded cloves or the flavour will be quite overwhelming.

  • Old-fashioned oats – 1/2 cup

  • All-purpose flour – 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp.

  • Granulated Sugar – 3/4 cup

  • Orange Zest

  • Orange Juice – 1/2 cup

  • Grounded Cloves – 1/4 tsp.

  • Pre-heat the oven to 375° and in a bowl mix oats, brown sugar and ½ cup flour.

  • Now add the butter and rub it well into the mixture to form small crumbs.

  • In another bowl, combine cranberries, raisins, apples, orange zest, orange juice, granulated sugar, 2 tbsp. flour and cloves.

  • Transfer this fruity mixture prepared in step 3 to an 8-inch rectangular (preferably square) shaped baking dish.

  • Top this fruity layer with a uniform layer of the crumb mixture.

  • Bake for about 45 minutes or until the crumb topping has browned nicely while the fruit is still tender (keep checking in between).

  • Once done, let it cool for about 15 minutes before serving.

PS: Ensure that your baking dish is at least 2 inches deep so that the fruit juices do not bubble over the edge and you don’t have to spend at least half an hour cleaning the oven floor. You can also consider placing a baking sheet under the dish to eliminate the risk.

  • Take oats and walnuts in a mixing bowl and add the maple syrup mixture to it. Mix well to evenly coat oats and walnuts.

  • Divide the oat mixture equally into two parts and line the two pans firmly and uniformly

  • Freeze for about 4 hours or until completely firm.

  • Take the frozen bananas in a food processor and add 5 tsp. of maple syrup and process until creamy and smooth

  • Now, take out both the oats layers and immediately spread the banana ice cream over one of the oats layers and carefully press the other layer on top of the ice (sandwich the banana ice cream between the two layers of oats)

  • Again deep freeze until firm.

  • To serve, use the foil to lift it out and using a sharp knife, cut into bars.
