Maruti Suzuki is working on a new 800cc diesel engine for Celerio, which is currently the smallest car offered by them. India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited is looking to kick start a diesel car market by this launch.
Both Celerio and the company’s Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) will be fitted with the new 800cc diesel engine. Currently, being developed at the Maruti Suzuki plant in Gurgaon, it claims will have a mileage of 30kmpl.
As on date, the available Maruti Celerio cars are powered by a 3 cylinder K series 1.0 litre petrol engine producing peak power of 67 PS and peak torque of 90 Nm mated to a 5 speed manual transmission.
High in demand by accounting for more than 51% of the total sales, the Celerio with AMT gearbox is a top favorite. The Celerio hatchback with diesel engine is also expected to have a good sale but it is not yet confirmed if this version will have an AMT gearbox.
This diesel engine is likely to be fitted in the new Eeco van which is scheduled for launch in 2016. Meanwhile, the diesel variant of the Celerio is expected to be launched in this financial year itself.
If the 800cc diesel engine performs as promised, Maruti Celerio will be the most efficient car on Indian roads in 2014 displacing Chevrolet Beat’s which tops the list of car with small engines with its 1,000 cc diesel engine.
