Every cricket match has a few decisive moments, moments of dazzling brilliance or lack thereof, which eventually prove to be turning points and swing the match into either teams favor. A fiery spell of swing bowling or a quick-fire century, a jaw-dropping super-human catch or a dropped sitter – moments like these have ensured India a win in every match they have played against Pakistan in the ICC World Cup since 1992. Here’s a look at those crucial moments.
1992 The final bout of two cricketing legends – Kapil Dev vs. Imran Khan
What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? A rousing display of fireworks. The 1992 World Cup clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan proved to be just that since it was to be the ultimate clash between two of the greatest cricketers these nations have produced. Even though Imran Khan led his team to eventually lift the trophy, it was Kapil Dev who came out on top in the league match by smashing 35 runs off a mere 26 deliveries and bagging 2 crucial wickets to ensure a win for India.
1996 Aamir Sohail vs. Venkatesh Prasad
This memorable 1996 World Cup battle is best remembered for the verbal spat between Venkatesh Prasad and Aamir Sohail. Sohail, just moments after raising his bat after a robust half-century, slashed a Prasad delivery over extra cover and signaled the bowler to go fetch the ball. A humiliated Prasad went on to bowl the next delivery which crashed into Sohail’s off stump as he attempted another slash. It was Prasad’s turn to send him off, which he delightfully did.
1999 Prasad’s first and only 5-for in ODIs
The credit for the match of 1999 could entirely be given to Venkatesh Prasad’s amazing spell of 5-27, which bundled up Pakistan for 180 runs. With crucial wickets of destructive batsmen like Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-Ul-Haq, Prasad guaranteed a win for India whilst achieving his first ever 5-for in ODIs.
2003 Sachin Tendulkar vs Shoaib Akhtar
A mouth-watering treat of a World Cup match was guaranteed due to the presence of these players on opposite ends of the wicket. Tendulkar made mincemeat out of the Pakistan bowling attack with exquisite shots to the fences. Cricket lovers can even today picture that unbelievable upper cut from Tendulkar off Shoaib Akhtar that cleared the stands for six runs.
2011 Sachin dropped four times.
Team India’s competitive total of 260 runs in this semi-final clash could easily be attributed to Tendulkar’s careful 85 runs off 115 balls, but Pakistan’s sloppy fielding eventually played a part in that innings and India’s win. Tendulkar was dropped a whopping four times on 27, 45, 70 and 81; thus leading India to a comprehensive win.
KohIi Does A Afridi and Sohali Takes a Five for!!!
Pakistan waalo bura na maano Kohli hai!!! Oh, we so love to say that, don’t we? 😉 . On 15th February 2015, Adelaide was all set to witness one of the oldest rivalries in cricketing history and how it did. Kohli’s 22nd ODI ton came at the right time. He was dropped twice; on 4 and then on 72. Pakistan’s chase seemed to go nowhere and the flamboyant Kohli did an Afridi after taking his catch.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s Sohail Khan grabbed a five for on his debut WC match.
This takes India’s World Cup tally against Pakistan to 6-0. It’s an over 😉 literally. Although Pakistan’s overall ODI record against India is far too superior it’s the World Cup that’s jinxed for them. There are chances that these teams might clash again in the knockout phase, who knows a 7 – 0 a might not be far away.
