Who doesn’t want beautiful nails? In fact, most women spend a considerable amount of their hard-earned money on manicures. However, there is one problem that even the most expensive manicures cannot solve. BRITTLE NAILS!
We all wish to have those healthy and pinkish nails that are absolutely free from all kinds of discolouration, pits and chapping. As nails are made of Keratin, the same protein as your hair, it becomes highly critical that you increase your protein intake. Now it comes to the treatment part.
Before we hop on to the treatment of brittle nails, let’s first understand what makes our nails break so easily:
Using nail polish over an extended period
Long-term exposure to water and detergents.
Hormonal changes during menopause.
Here are some simple home remedies to make your nails healthy and beautiful:
1. Moisturise nails with Vitamin E Oil:
Vitamin E oil is extremely helpful in keeping nails hydrated and moisturised. Apply it daily on your nails for two to three weeks and see the results for yourself. To make this remedy even more effective, apply it at night right before going to bed.
2. Moisturise nails with Coconut Oil:
Coconut oil contains saturated fats which make it one of the best natural ways to not just moisturise your nails, but also treat fungal infections. Warm two tablespoons of coconut oil and gently massage it on your nails and nail bed. Do this regularly for two to three weeks, until you get stronger and healthier nails.
3. Use Apple Cider Vinegar:
Apple cider vinegar is rich in nutrients like iron and calcium that makes nails stronger. It also contains acetic acid that prevents nail infections. Take enough apple cider vinegar in a bowl and mix it with an equal amount of water. Soak your nails in this solution for about 10 minutes. Repeat this process daily to get desired results.
4. Lemon Juice and Olive Oil mixture:
In a bowl, mix three tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of lemon juice. Heat the mixture until it’s lukewarm. Just before going to bed, apply a generous amount of this concoction on your nails and wear gloves. This mixture will not only strengthen your nails but revitalise them as well.
5. Milk and Egg Yolk mixture:
If dryness is the cause of your brittle nails, then this remedy is just perfect for you. Take two tablespoons of milk and the yolk of two eggs. Mix them together and massage the mixture onto your nails for about 5 minutes. Wash it off with fresh water and see the results for yourself.
6. Fresh orange juice extract:
Extract fresh juice from an orange and dip your nails in it. After about 10 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water. Repeat this routine every day for two to three weeks. Since orange juice is a great source of folic acid, it will make your nails healthier.
7. Moisturise you nails with Shea Butter:
We all love the moisturising properties of shea butter and use it often on our face and body. So, why not use it on our nails to hydrate them and bring them back to life. At night, before going to bed, apply shea butter cream on your nails and cuticles. Gently massage for 20 minutes and leave it on overnight. Viola! Not just your nails, but also your cuticles will become healthier than ever.
8. Green Tea:
Add a few green tea leaves to a cup of hot water and let it brew for a couple of minutes. Keep it aside for some time. While still lukewarm, dip your nails in the concoction for 15 to 20 minutes. The antioxidants in green tea will make your nails stronger and shinier.
9. A mixture of tomato juice and olive oil:
Tomatoes contain biotin (also called as vitamin H), which is known to thicken nails and reduce their splitting. In a bowl, add two tablespoons of olive oil to half a cup of tomato juice. Dip your nails in this mixture for around 10 minutes, after which you can wash it off with lukewarm water.
10. A combination of castor oil, peppermint oil and Epsom salt:
In a bowl take half a cup of castor oil and add a few drops of peppermint oil along with some Epsom salt. Dip your fingers in the mixture for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. This concoction will not only make your nails stronger and healthier but also prevent fungal infections.
The remedies to deal with brittle and weak nails do not have to come in fancy bottles and make a hole in your pockets. Try these home remedies and include protein-rich food items such as beans, eggs, yoghurt and cauliflower in your daily diet for healthy and shiny fingernails.
