The Verdict

Samsung Galaxy S5 is powerful and competent. The device offers a whole new UI. However, the Korean manufacturer should have progressed further with the look of its latest flagship smartphone.

Thumbs Up:

  • Big and bright screen

  • Sustaining battery life

  • Immensely powerful

Thumbs Down:

  • Regular creaky design

  • Slower background de-focus

  • Unwanted heart rate monitor

As soon as you unbox the latest flagship smartphone by Samsung, Galaxy S5 you will like the device a lot. Although, it is “THE SMARTPHONE OF 2014”, the phone lacks many features relatively.

Don’t arrive at conclusions right away. Galaxy S5 has plenty of innovations such as water resistance, a fingerprint reader for bypassing security passcodes and a heart rate sensor. The screen measures 5.1-inch diagonally, which larger than its predecessor’s 5-inch screen. Also, it is way bigger than the iPhone’s 4-inch screen. The Galaxy S5’s camera can click better pictures with its 16 megapixel’s, which is definitely an improvement from 13 megapixels camera of Galaxy S4.

Like many other Samsung smartphones, Galaxy S5 falls short on its construction. The removable plastic back helps in replacing the battery, but it looks a lot cheaper compared to the HTC One’s metal body or iPhone’s glass back.

Notably, with this smartphone, Samsung has focused on features, which people actually want to you. Few features of Galaxy S4 like auto-scroll of content on a tilt of the phone was considered as a clutter and didn’t work amongst the users.

Secure Interface

The interface of Samsung Galaxy S5 is a lot simple than its earlier models. Alike other Android phones, S5 is a little complex compared to Apple’s iPhone. On the other hand, you get an option of customizing it, which includes the ability to unlock your smartphone by drawing a pattern on the screen or a passcode. In the S5, Samsung has removed various less useful features from Samsung S4.

The heart rate sensor is located on the rear side, just below the camera lens. However, the app fails to continuously measure your pulse rate. To measure the pulse, you need to hold your finger on this sensor for almost five seconds before and after the activity. Then the information is stored in Samsung’s S Health app.

Water Resistant

Samsung offers water resistance feature, which means submerge it up to 3 feet deep water for almost 30 minutes. Now, without worrying about the device you can splash away by the swimming pool or even sweat on it while running.

The 16-megapixel camera brings the S5 closer to the offerings of stand-alone cameras. Galaxy S5 promises a faster auto-focus.

Exciting Apps

For me, the most exciting feature is the fingerprint reader. I enjoy using the fingerprint reader to unlock the device without entering the four-digit code. Samsung has not completely de-cluttered the smartphone.

Still, you have to use two separate apps to watch videos or listen to your favorite music. Galaxy S5 comes pre-loaded with the standard Android apps. Samsung Electronics Co. has loaded some of their apps on the device too.

Definitely, Galaxy S5 isn’t the only good smartphone, but the gadget offers enough features to give Samsung one more hit.
