Glam it with a Saree

The saree is no longer an aunty’s outfit, nor something that women are just expected to switch to donning post marriage. If anything, the saree is getting increasingly adventurous and is grabbing eyeballs on a global platform.

Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor recently stole the limelight as she sashayed the Cannes 2013 red carpet in a stunning oft white Chantilly lace Anamika Khanna saree and a full sleeve length jacket to give it an ethereal twist. The look was appreciated in India and Sonam made sarees with a twist a trend to reckon with, world over. However, sarees with a dash of funk to it are not something new back home and it’s been a few years now that experiments with the six yards began surfacing to the mainstream.

Designer Tarun Tahiliani has been teaming the traditional six and nine yards with metallic waist bands since decades. Designer Abraham Thakore took it a step forward and was seen sending his models in saris held in place at the waist by extremely modern patent leather slim belts.

More recently, the saree got another makeover in the form of the prints used on it. Young designers like Aarti Vijay Gupta, Masaba Gupta and Nida Mahmood drastically changed the way women looked at sarees. Show anyone a sariee with table fans, cows or cameras printed on it and they’ll immediately recognize it as a Masaba creation. Her sarees, multi-coloured with cocky prints on them made such an impact a few years back that till date fakes are sold in large numbers in stores all over the world. In the last two seasons, Aarti launched a line of jackets and saris with prints of pie charts, sketches of Mahatma Gandhi and the human anatomy and destination maps. Walk into a room wearing a sari with these prints and you’re bound to make heads turn.Jackets apart, one can also up the style quotient of a saree by teaming it with a striped or checkered vest or a bandgala for that matter.

The most important thing while experimenting with any of these looks is that one has to be comfortable in it. If you’re not, it means you’re trying too hard and it will show. Confidence is the key to pulling off funky saris. One can also ditch the petticoat or the skirt to be worn inside a saree and just go with skin fitting churidars instead. Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor has walked the runway several times with churi pants inside her saree. And boy, the look highlighted her curves like no other outfit has.

There’s no denying that the saree is the ultimate glamorous outfit. Think about it – sheer sarees are the best way to show off your torso and well-toned abs, without looking vulgar or as if you’re over exposing. Pick one in flowy material such as chiffon, georgette, satin or Italian crepe and it will hug your hips and thighs giving it an even more sensuous look. And with all the looks mentioned above, you can easily be the talking point of a party… in a saree!!!
