GRANDIOSE, COLLOSSAL, EPIC, GIGANTIC, MAGNANEMOUS, grandiloquent, AWE-INSPIRING – that’s what these movies are, on paper that is. They are most talked about while they are made and after they are released (at times for all the right and wrong reasons). The most recent movie to enter the list (on no. 1) is Baahubali. So here we list some of the most expensive Indian movies ever made. Good or bad, one things’ for sure, with the amount of money that is invested in making these movies, it makes me think – Sone Ki chidiya aaj bhi zinda hai, bus silver screen pe dikhti hai.

1. BAAHUBALI | TELUGU | 2015 | 175 CRORE
US$28 Million – now that’s a LOT of money!!! Touted to be one of the most expensive movies ever made in Indian cinema, Baahubali is a Telugu film directed by S. S. Rajamouli. Scheduled to be released on 10th July 2015, the movie stars Rana Daggubati, Prabhas Varma, Tamannah, Anushka Shetty, Sathyaraj, Ramya Krishnan, Tanikella Bharani, Sudeep, Adivi Sesh, and Nassar. The trailer reminded me of GAME OF THRONES for some reason and the graphics looked average. Bottom line: I hope the 2 million plus views the trailer has got so far crosses 28 by the 10th of July.
2. ENTHIRAN | TAMIL | 2010 | 132 CRORE
Another South Indian movie in the list, directed by S. Shankar, Enthiran was released in 2010. The movie featured Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai, Santhanam, Karunas, and Danny Denzongpa. The movie tells the story of a scientist who develops an android (robot). The robot is built in such a way that it comprehends human emotions. However, the robot is then manipulated by a rival scientist. The filmed received a positive response
3. RA.ONE | HINDI | 2011 | 125 CRORE
And finally we have a BOLLYWOOD movie in the list. The marketing gimmick by SRK was enough for the movie to recover its investment really. Even before the movie was released people had enough of it already. And after it was released, it was not enough of a movie per se. We all know the reviews it got.
4. DHOOM 3 | HINDI | 2013 | 125 CRORE
What happens when an over enthusiastic director with a zillion rupees in hand casts an overworked actor with a conveniently copied idea? DHOOM 3 happens!!! God bless all those souls who witnessed the great Abhishek Bachchan pull-off the balloon stunt yet another time, successfully!!! Don’t know how many years of practice he had put in to get that shot right. Guess even ARJUN would be impressed with this. Bottom line: Guess the film makers got the title wrong. It should have been DOOMED 3.
5. KOCHADAIYAAN | TAMIL | 2014 | 125 CRORE
From being a conductor to starring in overly excessive high budget films, Superstar RAJINIKANTH has come a long way indeed. This was also going to be Deepika Padukone’s next project after Om Shanti Om. The film was made using the performance capturing technology which has been used in Avatar. Although the movie received mix reviews worldwide, the box office reports say that it was a HUGE HUGE hit.
