Savoring Chinese cuisine has been a part and parcel of a foodie’s itinerary since the advent of Chinese takeaways. However, when coming to cooking Chinese cuisine from a scratch many of we end up scratching our heads in complete despair.

So for the proverbial dummies who have a hard time cooking anything else other than over the counter two minute Ramen noodles we bring you simple yet tasty Chinese dishes which will guarantee to make you smack your fingers along with the food.

Chinese Orange Chicken

We start with an all-time favorite American Chinese delicacy ‘Chinese Orange Chicken’ which has a tingle of orangey sweet flavor along with the traditional soy taste associated with Chinese food.

What do we need to make Chinese Orange Chicken?

  • 500 grams bones chicken cubed to pieces

  • 2 table spoons of corn flour

  • 2 eggs beaten

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • ½ teaspoon of sesame seeds

  • 1 spring onion roughly chopped

For the Marinade we need:

  • 1 cup chicken stock (made from stock cubes available in the market)

  • ½ cup sugar less orange juice

  • 1 table spoon of orange marmalade

  • 2 teaspoons of white vinegar

  • 3 teaspoons of soy sauce

  • 2 cloves of garlic roughly chopped

  • 3 teaspoons of hot tabasco or chili sauce

  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger

  • 1 teaspoon of white pepper powder.

How do we make the Chinese Orange Chicken?

Make the marinade by whisking together the chicken broth, orange juice, marmalade, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, hot sauce, ginger and white pepper in a large bowl.

Take aside 1/3rd of the marinade and add in the chicken pieces into the rest of the marinade and marinate the chicken for at least one hour.

In the meantime, heat the kept aside marinade on a low heat and add in corn flour mixed with water into the marinade on the heat stirring it occasionally.

Take the marinated chicken and coat it in the beaten eggs first and then on to the remaining corn starch and shallow fry the same in hot oil in a preheated wok until the chicken is golden brown.

Serve the chicken immediately preferably on boiled Chinese sticky rice drizzling over the heated marinade on the chicken and garnishing with sesame seeds and chopped spring onions.

Moving ahead we bring you ‘Baked Honey Hot Chicken Wings’. These baked chicken wings bring you a perfect crisp combination of sweetness and spiciness in every bite and are apt comfort food while watching the ongoing FIFA world cup matches.

What do we need to make Baked Honey Hot Chicken Wings?

  • 1 kg chicken wings

  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • Salt and pepper for taste

  • 1 table spoon of roughly chopped fresh coriander

  • 1 table spoon sesame seeds

For the Honey Hot Glaze:

  • 100 gms unsalted butter

  • 1 table spoon of all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon honey,

  • 1 tablespoon of Hot Tabasco or Hot chili sauce

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

How do we make the Baked Honey Hot Chicken Wings?

We start by preheating the oven to 200 degrees. To make the glaze, we start by melting the butter in a saucepan over medium heat then adding in the flour until it’s lightly browned. We stir in the honey, hot sauce, soy sauce and lime juice into the heating flour butter mixture and bring the glaze to a boil slightly thickening it.

In a large bowl combine the chicken wings with butter, vegetable oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Place the wings into the oven and bake for half an hour turning the same at regular intervals to cook them evenly. Brush the honey glaze onto the chicken wings and broil for 5 minutes or until the wings look crisp and crusted. Serve immediately garnishing with sesame seeds and chopped coriander.

Bang Bang Chicken

Moving to the next dish in our Chinese food journey is ‘Bang Bang Chicken’. Though the chicken is not inspired by the upcoming Bollywood movie of the same name, it is an amazingly crisp chicken bites recipe drizzled with sweet chili mayo sure to make you ask for more.

What do we need to make Bang Bang Chicken?

  • 500 gms boneless chicken cubed

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 100 gms all-purpose flour,

  • ½ cup corn flour

  • 1 egg beaten

  • 1 table spoon hot tabasco sauce

  • 1 cup bread crumbs

  • salt and pepper to taste

For the sauce:

  • 100 gms mayonnaise

  • 2 tablespoon chili sauce

  • 1 table spoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

How do we make Bang Bang Chicken?

We start by making the sauce by whisking together the mayonnaise, chili sauce, honey and sugar in a small bowl and setting it aside.

In a large bowl we whisk together, the buttermilk, both the flours, beaten egg, hot sauce, salt and pepper. One by one we dip the chicken pieces into the whisked mixture and dredge them onto the bread crumbs coating the chicken evenly.

Working in batches fry the chicken into the heated oil until the chicken turns golden brown and looks crispy. Serve immediately along with the Sweet Chili Mayo sauce drizzled on it.

These dishes are quite easy to make and less time consuming and are sure to make your taste buds tantalize with their delicious taste.
