Winters are bliss especially after the unruly October heat but the harsh cold temperatures make the skin dry, dull, stretchy and flaky. India being the country of extremes and varieties the winters in many parts of the nation can be rather annoying. Warm clothes are not enough to protect your skin against the cold climate! Over the years I’ve come to create my own list of skin care tips to face winter with a smile.
Replace your face wash with a mild cleanser and follow it up with a toner and moisturizer. Do so with a little warm water, so that your skin doesn’t lose its natural moisture. During winter watch your face couple of times. Bath in lukewarm water and just ensure that you follow your shower with a nice oil massage.
The mantra says- go for oil based moisturizer in winters to keep the skin soft and healthy. Nourish your neck equally as you do to your face. Since the skin gets flaky use loads of moisturizer. Heavily moisturize your elbows, knees, ankles and other dryness prone areas. Also remember to apply night cream before going to bed.
Quick ways to moisturise your skin the natural way during winter
Apply oil on your body especially almond oil, coconut oil, mustard seed oil before bath. It not only keeps the skin moisturized but also provides warmth in the chilly climate.
Mix equal portions of milk and honey and apply it on your face. Leave it for 15 minutes and then wash it off. Milk and honey are natural moisturizers and usually have no side-effects.
Make a natural scrubber- take a handful of sugar and mix it with adequate amount of honey and any oil present at home. Sugar acts as a scrubber which exfoliates the skin and sugar and honey contains glucose which moisturizes the skin.
Many of us have aloe vera plant at home. Cut on leaf and extract the jelly. This jelly works as an excellent moisturiser.
Fight Against the Sun, not heat
No matter which season- summer, monsoon or winters always apply sunscreen because the sun rays are equally harmful. Don’t shy away from sunscreens. Even if you aren’t going out wear a lighter sunscreen at home. Winter render our soles dry and cracked up.
Apply heavy moisturizers such as petroleum jelly, Vaseline, anti crack cream everyday and protect them with socks from the extreme coolness of the floor and don’t forget to wear flip flops even at home.
Right Diet during winter
Your diet should be protein rich but carbohydrate intake should be adequate enough. Consume a lot of vitamin A, vitamin B complexes. Such foods include- poultry, meat and products, dairy and dairy products, cereals, pulses, green leafy vegetables, water melons and tropical fruits. Vitamin C is an important part of the skin and consumption of lemon juice, oranges, and grape fruit is recommended.
Winter is the best time to exercise. Choose your favourite exercising form be it serene Yogasnas or rigorous Zumba or simple morning walks. Exercising is also beneficial as increase in metabolic rate leads to conversion of fat into oil which moisturizes the skin, addition to increasing your body’s resistance to low temperatures.
These are just a few tips but will have a great impact on your skin in winters. Worry no more about the harsh and windy climate.. it’s time for some coffee by the fireplace with a novel in hand.
