Combating sore throat in a homely way

Headaches, cold, flu, fever, these all are some of the most common problems that almost everyone faces with seasonal changes and most of the times, the signal that you are soon going to fall ill is given by a sore throat.

Most of us try to ignore when its only sore throat due to which the infection eventually converts into fever and cold. Half the distress will be taken care of if you start treating yourself for sore throat from the day you experience it. It doesn’t mean that one has to rush to doctor; the everyday used things found around at home can be your saviour.

Salt Water Gargle

For a fast and effective relief from sore throat, nothing beats the age-old remedy of salt water gargle. Gargle with a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of salt mixed in it, the magic will happen if it is repeated several times in a day. Salt acts as a mild antiseptic and also draws water out of mucous membranes in the throat, which helps to clear phlegm. A gargle with baking soda solution is also a good alternative. One half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water-gargle can also bring you relief from sore throat.

Honey has antibacterial properties which help in speedy healing. Adding few teaspoons of honey into warm water or herbal tea and consuming it will help you in reducing the distress caused by sore throat. It acts as a hypertonic osmotic and hence draws water out of inflamed tissue.

Even if you don’t have honey, consuming a cup of herbal tea gives a very soothing effect. Non-herbal teas contain antioxidants that help in strengthening immunity.
