Want that Amazon order in just 30 minutes? Amazon has unveiled its secret research project which it claims will be the future of home delivery – packages delivered by drones. The company hopes to soon deploy an armada of mini-drones able to drop small packages at your doorstep. These drones would be able to carry goods up to five pounds in weight, which covers 86 per cent of the items that the company delivers.
The mini-drones are powered by environment-friendly electric motors and can cover areas within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of fulfillment centers, thus covering a significant portion of the population in urban areas. These drones operate autonomously and follow the GPS coordinates they receive to drop the items off at target locations. However, Amazon’s revolutionary project still needs extra safety testing and federal approval, but the company believes ‘Prime Air’ would be up and running within four to five years. The retail giant also claims the drones are safe; the prototype has redundant motors that will keep it in the air and prevent it from crashing.
The technology will advance and so will our comfort with the idea. Even if Amazon’s service does not succeed, the idea it embodies is too powerful to suppress. Welcome robot overlords, we’ve waited a long time to meet you.
