Darkening of the skin around the knees and elbows doesn’t really begin to bother us, until the time we prepare ourselves for a short dress, or a sleeveless top. So as to speak, we barely realise that the skin has darkened, as it doesn’t cause pain or any discomfort. Hence we ignore until it is too late to make amends.
Darkening of the skin around our knees, elbows, and knuckles can happen for several reasons. Most common being friction (constant rubbing against the table at work, or propping your elbows on the carpet while reading / TV etc), ageing, skin allergies, genetics, side effects of drugs etc.These natural remedies should help lighten those dark ugly patches.
Lemon is easily available in everyone’s household. It acts as a natural bleaching agent and also exfoliates the skin by removing dry dead cells and clears away tanning. Cut a lemon in two halves and rub it in the affected part of the body and scrub it for 10-15 minutes. After using lemon on the knees and elbows, wash the area and apply a good moisturiser like Vaseline. Following this routine at a regular interval of 15 days, will show a visible difference in the tone and the texture of your skin.
Mix 2 parts of fresh lime juice and some sea salt (rock salt/crystal salt) with 1 part of water in a clean bowl. Rub this mixture daily for 10-15 mins and follow it as a part of your daily cleansing routine. Salt exfoliates the dead skin cells, olive oil acts as a moisturizer and lemon acts as a bleaching agent making this an effective remedy to get rid of darkness of knees and elbows. It is important to test your skin for sensitivity before you use lemon. However, if you experience irritation of skin, apply some petroleum jelly or Vaseline. Avoid applying this mixture if the affected area is very dry or bruised.
Make a thick paste of baking soda and lemon juice and apply it to the elbows and knees in circular motion daily or on alternate days. Baking soda acts as a natural cleanser and lemon juice acts as a bleaching agent and improves the complexion.
Mix 2 parts of coconut oil with 1 part of lemon juice and apply on the knees and elbows and leave it to dry for 15 – 20 minutes. Clean off the excess mixture on the skin. Coconut oil also acts as a hydrating and bleaching agent and removes the tan in the area.
Make a thick past of 1 part of olive oil to 1 part of sugar. Massage the affected area with this for 15 mins before bath for about 15-20 days to see a difference. Sugar will exfoliate the dead cells and olive oil will moisturize and nourish the skin.
Potato is a good source of lightening agent used on skin. Take a slice of potato and rub it in on your elbows and knees for a few minutes daily to remove the tan and improve the complexion of the skin
Make a thick paste of gram flour and lemon and apply it to the affected part regularly. Lemon acts as a natural bleaching agent and Gram flour acts as a gentle exfoliating agent and will help to reduce the darkness of the skin and moisturizes the skin as well.
Mix together equal quantities of vinegar and yogurt and apply it to the affected part and let it dry. Once the affected part is patted dry, wash it with water and repeat the process daily for a few months.
Squeeze out juice from a medium sized lemon and add 1 tablespoon of honey and mix well. Apply this mixture to the affected part and leave it to dry for 15-20 mins daily. Wash it later with water and pat dry. Honey helps to nourish and moisturize the skin while lemon acts as a natural bleaching agent.
As much as darkening is a natural phenomenon, this is only temporary. It is the neglect that makes these darkened patches permanent. .
