Castor oil is used all over the world for its medicinal properties. It is a vegetable oil squeezed out from the seeds of castor plant. Ricinus communis, the scientific term of this plant has its origin in Africa and India.
My grandmother used to add a drop of castor oil while cooking dhal. When I enquired the reason for adding this oil, I came to know that it is not for flavor but it seems that it softens the dhal and helps cooking them faster. In addition, it helps for better digestion.

Castor Oil as Pain Relief
The anti-inflammatory properties in this oil are a great remedy for reducing inflammation and swelling of joints and tissues. While treating severe rheumatoid arthritis it is recommended to intake 2 spoonfuls of castor oil in a glass of water. Here is an excellent granny style DIY treatment for instant relief from joint pain, nerve inflammation and sore muscles.
Directions to apply:
Use a lightweight cotton flannel to prepare an oil pad. Soak the flannel in the castor oil and press out the excess oil. Now your oil pad is ready to use on the affected area.
Place this oil pad wherever you got pain. Cover it with a plastic wrap and leave it on for an hour.
You shall also offer yourself a heat therapy by placing a hot water bottle or a heating pad on top of this wrap.
Follow this procedure twice a week.
You can reuse this oil pad by refrigerating this pad in a tightly closed zip lock bag.
Treating Lymphatic System and Liver
To drain excess fluids from lymph and liver, recline flat on your back, position the pad (this time prepare a big oil pad) on the abdomen and cover with a plastic sheet and an old towel. Now keep a pillow under your knees and stay for at least an hour to get better result.
Castor oil is a powerful laxative and one teaspoon of pure cold pressed castor oil a day – for three consecutive days helps the bowels start moving very quickly. Also it’s safe for use by both adults and children as long as the recommended dosage is not exceeded.
